SCALE-ing Up: Student Engagement and Learning in Science Classes

SCALE-UP (Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs) is a student-centered, technology-enriched, team-based method of learning in which students work in teams on problem-based and hands-on activities. Over the past five years, Virginia Tech has constructed three SCALE-UP classrooms, offered a host of science courses in this format, and is constructing a new classroom building consisting entirely of “active-learning” spaces. This interactive seminar will introduce participants to the SCALE-UP format, share best-practices and lessons learned from lower- and upper-division cell biology classes, and provide data on student success and motivation in the SCALE-UP format.
About the Speaker
Jill Sible earned her BS in Biochemistry from the University of New Hampshire and PhD in Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology from Tufts University School of Medicine where she was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Pre-doctoral Fellow. She completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Medicine.
