Overview

Ron Pegg, a 2013 Richard B. Russell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching winner, was recognized for his classroom success utilizing a pedagogy of deep engagement. In this session, Dr. Pegg will share his award-winning strategies for instructional success that have utility across a broad range of disciplines. He describes this sessions this way: “In Field Study. A Source Book For Experiential Learning, Lenore Borzak (1981) stated that experiential learning involves a ‘direct encounter with the phenomena being studied rather than merely thinking about the encounter, or only considering the possibility of doing something about it.’ My philosophy on integrating lecture material with hands-on laboratory experiences in the Food Science discipline follows the intent of experiential learning instructional pedagogy; that being, to provide a series of pragmatic laboratory activities sequenced in such a way to enhance the educational experience of the student. By teaching the basic concepts, showing them, and then allowing the students to apply the acquired knowledge through a hands-on exercise, my role has changed from simply disseminating the information to facilitating student learning. Via this mechanism, better critical thinking skills develop and the student retains a deeper understanding/appreciation of the material. The seminar will discuss my approaches to this learning methodology.”
