Teacher of the Week - Kristen Smith
Senior Lecturer, Department of Public Relations, Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication
“Her level of attention and care is hard to come by...”
The Center for Teaching and Learning recognizes Kristen Smith as CTL Teacher of the Week. Smith is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Relations in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Kristen Smith believes when students are learning new ideas and skills, they need to be challenged and encouraged. She sets high standards and challenges her students to think and to work hard, but she also celebrates their progress and accomplishments. Smith earned two degrees at UGA and is still inspired by the Honors Program faculty and other faculty members across campus to whom she credits much of her classroom success. Additionally, she has learned about the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and about how people learn best from programming sponsored by UGA’s Center for Teaching and Learning.
One classroom approach Smith uses is to have students get into design teams of four or five people to discuss a concept or to practice a skill the class is learning, and then share their experiences with the class. This collaborative learning engages the students and encourages them to interact with the material and also with each other. The class learns things from each other, and it begins to feel like a community of individuals focused on the same goals.
Advertising student, Abbie Brans comments, “Kristen’s graphic communications class was the jump start to my career. She spent the time to assist each student personally and to make sure that we fully understood the programs we were using and was more than willing to work with us outside of class time. Her level of attention and care is hard to come by, and I will always appreciate her and the time she spent working with me.”
